Your Google Maps rank changes with where the searcher is standing. A good tracker checks from a grid of points around your business instead of one spot. Compare trackers on three things: grid size, how often each one scans, and what each scan costs. Prices below were checked on vendor pages on 8 Oct 2026.
Local Falcon is best for deep audits you run whenever you want. BrightLocal adds citations and audits. Whitespark is cheapest for tracking many keywords. Semrush Local suits teams already on Semrush. Localo combines rank, posts and reviews. Reach by Locus is for owners who want a weekly trend without counting credits.
Why does one rank number mislead?
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). Distance depends on the person searching. A customer two lanes away and a customer across town can see different lists for the same search.
The effect is large. In Reach's October 2026 sample of 1,104 independent listings across 11 Asian cities and six business types, the top 3 dentists sat a median 0.24 km from the search point. Dentists ranked 4 to 20 sat a median 0.86 km away (dentist data). Distance moves rank more than most profile edits. A single rank number tells you how you look from one point. A grid shows how you look across your area.
What should you compare?
Every tracker on this page reports a rank. They differ in how much of your area they cover, how often they check, and how they charge for it. Look at these points before you pay:
- Grid size. Grids run from 3x3 (nine points) up to 21x21. A bigger grid covers more ground and usually costs more per scan.
- Frequency. Some tools scan on demand, some weekly, some daily.
- Keywords included. Check how many searches the plan covers per location.
- Cost per scan. Credit-based tools charge per grid point, so a bigger or more frequent scan uses more credits.
- List rank vs map grid. A list rank is one position. A map grid shows position at each point.
- Competitor view. Some plans show who outranks you at each point.
- Reports. Check whether you can export a report to share or keep.

A few points stand out. Local Falcon gives you the most control because you pick the grid size and scan only when you need to. BrightLocal costs more, but the price includes citation monitoring and an audit. Whitespark covers 100 keywords for the lowest yearly price and also tracks Bing. Reach is the newest tool in this list and has the smallest grid. It also tracks a Hindi search and its English twin as two separate searches, and that matters if your customers search in both languages.
How much does a month of tracking cost?
Credit-based pricing looks cheap until you multiply it out. The worked example below uses one salon tracking five keywords.
One salon, five keywords
A salon owner wants to track five searches, such as "salon near me", "hair spa" and "bridal makeup", across their neighbourhood.
Local Falcon, weekly. A 7x7 grid is 49 points, so each scan costs 49 credits. Five keywords x 4 weeks x 49 credits = 980 credits a month. That fits easily inside Starter's 7,500 credits at $24.99.
Local Falcon, daily. The same five keywords scanned daily: 5 x 30 x 49 = 7,350 credits. That uses almost the whole Starter allowance, with little left for extra audits.
Reach. The Free plan covers 2 of the 5 searches with a weekly 3x3 scan. Starter at $10/month covers all 5.
Whitespark. Weekly Small Business at $14/month billed yearly covers 100 location keywords, far more than five. Check its grid feature on the vendor page, because the pricing page does not state a grid size.
| Tool | Setup | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Local Falcon | Setup5 keywords, weekly 7x7 (980 credits) | Monthly cost$24.99 (Starter) |
| Local Falcon | Setup5 keywords, daily 7x7 (7,350 credits) | Monthly cost$24.99 (Starter, nearly used up) |
| Reach by Locus | Setup2 keywords, weekly 3x3 | Monthly costFree |
| Reach by Locus | Setup5 keywords, weekly 3x3 | Monthly cost$10 (Starter) |
| Whitespark | SetupUp to 100 keywords, weekly | Monthly cost$14 billed yearly |
The lesson is about frequency. Weekly scans on a mid-size grid are cheap with any credit tool. Daily scans on the same grid cost about seven times as much and add little for most owners.
Where is Reach weaker?
Reach is a simpler tracker than the others in this list, and some owners will outgrow it. Compared with the other five tools:
- It only scans a 3x3 grid. It cannot show the edges of a wide service area the way a 7x7 or 21x21 grid can.
- It scans weekly only. There are no daily scans.
- You cannot run a scan on demand after you change your profile.
- It tracks a maximum of 30 searches per location, on the Business plan.
- It does not track Bing.
If you run a service-area business that covers a whole city, or an agency running audits for clients, Local Falcon or BrightLocal fits better. If you want to know each week whether you still hold your own neighbourhood, a 3x3 grid answers that.
Can you check your rank free first?
Yes. Before you pay for any tracker, do a spot-check with a free tool. Reach's free local rank checker shows where you rank for a search, and the Google Maps local finder checker shows your position in Google's local finder list. Neither needs a signup.
A free check is one snapshot from one point. Use it to see whether you have a problem. Use a tracker to see whether your changes fix it over time.
Questions owners ask
- How often should I check my Maps rank?
- Weekly is enough to show a trend. Daily checks mostly show noise from personalisation and the time of day, so they make small moves look bigger than they are.
- What grid size do I need?
- A 3x3 grid shows whether you hold your own neighbourhood. A 7x7 grid or larger shows the edges of a service area, which matters if you travel to customers or want to pull them in from further away.
- Is a free rank checker accurate?
- It is accurate for the one point and the one moment it checked. It does not show how you rank across your area or over weeks. Use it as a spot-check.
- Can a rank tracker improve my rank?
- No. A tracker only measures. Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking (Google Business Profile Help). Rank moves when your profile becomes more relevant and prominent for the search.
- Does Bing matter?
- Whitespark tracks both Google and Bing. Most owners in India and Southeast Asia start with Google, because that is where most of their customers search.

A weekly map scan without counting credits
Tracking rank by hand means searching from different spots each week and writing the results down. Reach does that work for you: each tracked search gets its list rank and a nine-point map scan around your business every week, and you can export the result as a PDF on every plan. Nothing is charged per scan, so a weekly check never runs down an allowance. If customers search in Hindi and English, Reach tracks the two versions as separate searches.
The trade-off is a 3x3 grid and weekly scans only. The Free plan tracks 2 searches per location, which is enough to see whether you hold your neighbourhood before you decide on anything bigger.
