Search your exact business name and city on Google Maps. If your profile doesn't appear, it is unverified, suspended, waiting on edits, or a duplicate. If it appears for your name but not for searches like "dentist near me", you have a ranking problem: relevance, distance and prominence. Google says nobody can pay for a better local rank.
Is my business missing, or just ranking low?
This test takes about two minutes. Run three searches:
- On Google Maps, search your exact name and city, for example "Sharma Dental Clinic Pune".
- On Google Search, sign in and search "my business". This opens the profiles you manage (Google's method).
- On Google Maps, search your type of business near you, for example "dentist near me".
Then match what you saw:
| Result | Meaning | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Not found by name; "my business" shows it unverified | MeaningNot verified | Go toCheck 1 |
| Not found by name; you got a notice of suspension | MeaningSuspended | Go toCheck 2 |
| Found by name, not by category | MeaningRanking | Go toChecks 5 to 7 |
| Found by name, wrong pin or no pin | MeaningAddress hidden or pin issue | Go toCheck 3 |
If customers can find you by name, Google is showing your profile. The problem is where it ranks for the searches you tried (how Google ranks local results).
1. Is it verified?
Google says: "Only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search" (source). If "my business" shows your profile as unverified, finish verification first. Follow the verification guide.
2. Is it suspended or disabled?
A profile that breaks Google's guidelines "becomes disabled or suspended and won't show" (source). Google sends the notice to the Google account that manages the profile. Check that inbox. To appeal, use the suspended profile guide.
3. Is the address hidden or the pin wrong?
A service-area business hides its address, so no pin shows for an address. It still appears for searches in its service areas (source). Problems start when a business that has a shop customers visit is set up as service-area only, or when the pin sits in the wrong place. Both affect distance, which Google uses to rank you.
To fix the setup, read the service-area guide. To move a wrong pin, open Edit profile, go to Location and drag the pin.
4. Are edits pending or just made?
Edits "can take up to 3 days to appear" (source). Google reviews changes. If you change your name, address or category, Google can ask you to verify again. Make the edit once, then wait. If you keep editing, each change goes back for review.
5. Is the primary category right?
Relevance depends on how well your profile matches what people search. A clinic set to "Dental clinic" may not match searches for "Dentist" as well as it could. Compare your category with what customers type. Use the category guide and the free category finder.
6. Is it new?
Google says: "Rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results" (source). If you opened last week, give it time.
7. Then it's ranking: relevance, distance, prominence
Google uses three factors (source):
- Relevance: how well your profile matches the search.
- Distance: how far you are from the person searching.
- Prominence: how well known your business is, from links and reviews, for example.
Google's own tips are to fill in complete info, verify, keep hours accurate, respond to reviews and add photos. Google also says: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google."
Also check two more things. Duplicate profiles split your reviews between listings. Fix them with the duplicate profile guide. Also make sure your business isn't marked temporarily or permanently closed. See business marked closed on Google. The free profile audit can help you find gaps.
Why does my business show for some people and not others?
Results depend on where the searcher is (source). When you search from inside your shop, you see a different order than a customer 2 km away. Your own phone is the worst device to test with.
For a fair check, search the same term from 4 points around your business in an incognito window, or ask 4 people in different places to search. You can also use grid tracking, which runs the same search from fixed points. The rank tracking guide explains how.
Worked example
Illustrative example.
Café Basil is in Thao Dien, Ho Chi Minh City. The owner says, "We're not on Maps."
Test. A Maps search for "Café Basil Thao Dien" finds the profile. A search for "cafe Thao Dien" from the owner's flat, 3 km away, doesn't show it.
Diagnosis. The profile isn't missing. It's ranking low. Three things hold it back:
- The primary category is "Restaurant" instead of "Cafe".
- It has 23 reviews. Nearby cafes have 300 or more.
- Nobody has added photos since opening.
Fix.
- Change the primary category to Cafe. Google may check the change, so make no other edits for a few days.
- Add 15 new photos.
- Reply to all 23 reviews.
- Ask regulars for reviews. The guide to asking customers for reviews shows how.
Measure. Run the same searches on a grid each week and compare the results week by week.
FAQ
- Why is my business not showing on Google Maps after verification?
- Edits can take up to 3 days to appear. Rankings for a new business can take up to a month (source).
- Why can I see my business but customers can't?
- Distance. You search from your business, so you see yourself near the top. Customers search from somewhere else.
- Does a suspended profile show on Maps?
- No. Disabled or suspended profiles don't show to other users (source).
- Can I pay Google to show my business higher?
- No (source). Google Ads is a separate paid product, and those results carry an ad label.
- How do I find my profile if I can't see it?
- Sign in to your Google account and search "my business" on Google.
- My address isn't shown. Is that why?
- If you run a service-area business, Google hides the address by design. Your profile still shows in your service areas (source).
