Google suspends profiles that break its guidelines. A suspended profile is hidden from customers and locked for edits. To get it back, open the appeals tool and read the reason. Fix the cause. Then appeal with a registration, licence, tax certificate or utility bill that matches the profile's name and address. Google emails its decision.
Is my profile suspended, restricted, or just unverified?
Find the row that matches what you see.
| What you see | What it means | First step |
|---|---|---|
| An email or notice says the profile is suspended or disabled. The profile is gone from Maps and you can't make changes. | What it meansProfile suspension. Google uses "suspended or disabled" together (Google). | First stepUse the appeals tool. |
| All your profiles are suspended, and you can't create or claim new ones. | What it meansYour Google account is restricted. | First stepAppeal on the "My accounts" page first (Google). |
| A "Get verified" button shows, and the profile isn't live. | What it meansThe profile isn't verified. This is not a suspension. | First stepFollow the verification guide. |
| The profile is visible, but your edits don't save or you lost management access. | What it meansPeople in the industry often call this a "soft suspension". Google doesn't use that term. | First stepCheck the appeals tool for a notice. Then check People and access. |
| The profile is missing, and you got no notice. | What it meansIt may have been merged as a duplicate, marked closed, or dropped in ranking. | First stepRead why a profile doesn't show on Maps. |
"Soft suspension" and "hard suspension" are industry shorthand, used by Whitespark and others. Google's pages say "suspended or disabled".
Why did Google suspend my business?
Most suspensions come from a break of Google's guidelines. Common causes include:
- The name has extra words. Keywords, the city, a tagline, a phone number or opening hours added to the business name. See the name rules for examples.
- The address isn't where you work. A virtual office, a rented mailing address or a PO box.
- A co-working desk. Google expects signage, staff and customer access during your hours.
- No signage. The address on Google has no permanent, fixed signage.
- A home address is showing. A service-area business must hide its home address.
- More than one profile. Two or more profiles for the same location.
- The business type isn't allowed. An online-only business with no in-person contact, or a property for rent or sale.
Practitioners also report suspensions after a risky edit, where the name, address and category all change at once. That comes from experience in the field, not from a Google page.
How do I fix the cause before I appeal?
Google reviews your appeal against the profile as it stands now. If the profile still breaks a rule, such as a keyword name or a virtual office address, the appeal is likely to be denied. The appeal flow shows you the reason and the policy before you submit (Google).
- Keyword name: Change it to the real name on your signboard. Your evidence must show that name.
- Virtual office: You can't fix this at that address. If you serve customers at their locations, set up as a service-area business and hide the address. See the service-area guide.
- Duplicate profile: Keep the one with reviews and remove the other. See the duplicate guide.
- Home address showing on a service-area business: Hide it.
- No signage: Put up permanent signage and photograph it.
How do I appeal?
These steps come from Google's page Fix suspended or disabled profiles.
- Open the Google Business Profile appeals tool.
- Sign in to the account that manages the profile, then select Confirm.
- Select the profile, then select Continue.
- Read the reason and the linked policy.
- Select Submit appeal at the bottom right.
- Upload your evidence when asked. You must submit within 60 minutes of opening the form, or the evidence won't be attached to your appeal.
- Select Submit. Google emails you the decision.
If you appeal for 10 or more profiles, attach a spreadsheet. List the evidence and the Business Profile ID for each profile.
If your Google account itself is restricted, appeal on the "My accounts" page first. While the account is restricted, every profile it manages stays suspended.
Evidence that works
Google accepts four kinds of document (Google). The India and Southeast Asia documents below are local examples of each kind. They are not Google's own list.
| Google's category | India examples | Southeast Asia examples |
|---|---|---|
| Business registration | India examplesCertificate of incorporation, partnership deed, Shop and Establishment registration | Southeast Asia examplesIndonesia NIB, Malaysia SSM certificate |
| Business licence | India examplesTrade licence, clinic registration, FSSAI licence for food businesses | Southeast Asia examples- |
| Tax certificate | India examplesGST registration certificate | Southeast Asia examples- |
| Utility bill | India examplesElectricity, phone, water or internet bill in the business name at the profile address | Southeast Asia examples- |
The name and address on the document must match the profile. A GST certificate in only the owner's legal name can fail. So can an electricity bill at the landlord's address. Choose the document that matches the profile exactly. If the registered name is the name you really trade under, change the profile to that name instead.
Photos of your signage or shopfront aren't on Google's list. Don't use them as your main evidence. If the form lets you add them as extra files, they won't hurt.
How long does reinstatement take, and what if it's denied?
Google doesn't publish a timeline. It emails you when it decides. Treat any numbers on forums as other people's experience, not Google's.
If your appeal is denied, Google says: "Only if your reinstatement request is denied, we may be able to do an additional review" (Google). For that review, send evidence you didn't send the first time.
No one can promise reinstatement. Only Google decides.
Worked example (illustrative)
Lotus Hair & Beauty is a salon in Koramangala, Bengaluru. Its profile name was "Lotus Hair & Beauty - Best Salon in Koramangala | Bridal Makeup". The profile was suspended after a competitor reported it.
- Fix the cause. The owner renames the profile to "Lotus Hair & Beauty", the name on the signboard. If Google blocks the edit, the appeal states the corrected name.
- Check the evidence. The GST certificate shows the owner, Kavya Rao, trading as "Lotus Hair & Beauty" at the salon address. That matches. The electricity bill is in the landlord's name, so she doesn't use it.
- Appeal. She saves the GST certificate as a PDF before she opens the evidence form. She uploads it in under 5 minutes, well inside the 60-minute limit.
- Wait. Google will email her its decision.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check whether your Google account itself is restricted |
| 2 | Read the reason in the appeals tool |
| 3 | Fix the cause on the profile |
| 4 | Upload evidence that matches the profile within 60 minutes |
| 5 | Wait for Google's email |
FAQ
- Why was my Google Business Profile suspended without warning?
- Google can suspend a profile when its own review or a report finds a guideline break. The appeals tool shows the reason.
- Can I create a new profile instead?
- No. Google says not to while an appeal is under review. A second profile for the same location also breaks the guidelines.
- How many times can I appeal?
- If your appeal is denied, Google may do an additional review. Google doesn't state a maximum.
- Will I lose my reviews?
- Google's appeal page doesn't say.
- Can an agency guarantee reinstatement?
- No. Only Google decides.
- My Google account is restricted. What now?
- Appeal on the "My accounts" page first. Then appeal for each profile.
After reinstatement: keep the profile clean
With Reach
After you get the profile back, every later edit carries risk. In Reach by Locus, the Presence page saves your name, description, categories and hours to Google. After each save, it lists what reached Google, what stayed in Reach and why, and what Google refused. You see a rejected edit right away. Search Visibility shows the competitors ranked around you, which helps if a competitor reports you or a fake listing appears.
Reach can't appeal for you, submit evidence or lift a suspension.
