Why a listing doesn’t show

  • Not verified, or suspended

Open your Business Profile and look for a verified status. A suspended profile shows a notice there and does not appear on Maps.

    Verify your profileFix a suspension

  • The category doesn’t match the search

Google matches searches to your categories. A cafe listed only as a restaurant can miss “cafe near me”.

    Choose the right category

  • The person searching is too far away

Google weighs how close you are to the person searching, so you can show on one side of town and not on the other.

Track your rank across the map

  • A duplicate or filtered listing

When two listings share a name and address, Google can show one and hide the other. Search your name on Maps and look for a second pin.

    Merge a duplicate listing

  • Few reviews or photos

Prominence comes partly from reviews and how complete your profile is. With few of either, businesses with more history tend to show first.

Ask for more reviewsAdd better photos

After sign-up, Reach runs your search from nine points around your business. The reasons above are what to look at when you don’t show.

How it works

  1. Find your business and type the search customers use, like “dentist near me”.
  2. Read the five reasons a listing doesn’t show, each with the guide that fixes it.
  3. Sign up free, and Reach checks your rank for that search from nine points around you.

What you learn

  • Whether you show for the search at all, and where you drop out of sight.
  • Which of Google’s reasons, relevance, distance or prominence, is most likely holding you back.
  • The guide that fixes each reason, in the order to try them.

What it can't tell you

  • A suspension, a pending verification or a hidden duplicate shows only inside your Business Profile, not in a public search.
  • Google personalises results, so one person’s phone can show a different order.
  • The first rank check takes a few minutes; it fills in on your Visibility screen when it is done.

Questions

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence: how well your profile matches the search, how far you are from the person searching, and how well known you are, including reviews. A listing that is unverified, suspended or filtered as a duplicate doesn’t show at all.

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads show separately and are labelled as sponsored.

Check the category first: Google matches searches to your categories, so a business listed under the wrong one can miss the search entirely. Then check for a second listing with your name and address, which can push yours out of the results.

The check asks Google from nine points around your business, so it runs on a free Reach account under its plan. Your search is saved and checked as soon as you sign up.
