The Google Business Profile updates worth an owner’s attention are post-view counts, the Gemini connection, stronger review protection and suggested-edit alerts, plus changes to how customers use Maps. This dated checklist was checked on 8 October 2026 against Google’s own announcements and help pages. Rollout announcements do not prove that your account has a feature.
Read the date and the product before changing anything
This is a selected owner-relevant update log, not a claim to list every interface experiment. Announcement dates appear beside announced changes. Where Google’s help page gives no launch date, the entry says “checked” instead. Only Google sources support the product claims below; no third-party reports are treated as confirmed releases.

10 September 2026: per-post view counts
In the September Small Business Bulletin, Google employee Lisa Landsman announced view counts on post cards in the Business Profile dashboard. The announcement covers updates, offers and events and aggregates Search and Maps views. It says the feature was rolling out globally and was not yet available to software through Google’s application programming interface. Treat that integration limit as dated announcement information, not a promise about future integrations.
Owner action: sign in to Google, open Posts and inspect the count on each available post card. Use the number to understand exposure, then check enquiries or bookings separately. A view does not establish that someone read the whole offer or became a customer. Compare posts with similar purposes and dates; a closure notice and a discount offer answer different customer needs. Do not assume a third-party dashboard receives these new counts without checking its documented support.
6 August 2026: Ask Maps expands
Google’s August Ask Maps announcement expanded the consumer experience, naming Indonesia among additional markets and a wider English rollout. It also announced food ordering and conversational contributions, initially in the US. Do not assume a restaurant in India or Thailand received ordering just because Ask Maps became available nearby. Read the feature-specific rollout paragraph.
Owner action: check that your public contact and destination links work, that opening information matches actual service, and that your site answers common visit questions. This is a customer-discovery change rather than a new owner dashboard. The AI Overviews and AI Mode guide lists the dated Ask Maps announcements and the profile fixes worth making. Do not buy an “activation” package without asking what documented setting the provider will change.
10 June 2026: a native Gemini profile connection
Google announced a Business Profile connection and Business notebooks in Gemini on 10 June. This is Google’s own connection. It is not the Reach MCP integration. Check the current eligibility help before attempting setup; a regional rollout headline is not an assurance that every managing account qualifies.
Owner action: identify the account that manages your verified profile and inspect the available connection in Gemini’s web app. Keep Google’s eligibility rules separate from your business’s eligibility for a profile itself. If you cannot connect, do not remove legitimate manager access or create duplicate listings to try to force the feature. Use the Gemini connection article to diagnose the account and rollout conditions.
16 April 2026: review protection and edit alerts
Google announced stronger protection against review scams, including temporary review pauses and owner alerts when it detects suspicious spikes. It also announced email alerts for verified, active owners to review important suggested profile edits and Gemini-based detection of inappropriate place-name edits. These were announced rollouts, not proof that every edit now waits for owner approval.
Owner action: ensure the team responsible for the profile checks the managing inbox. If hours or contact details change unexpectedly, compare the public listing with your approved information and inspect available notifications. Keep evidence of what is wrong and correct the actual field. If reviews are paused, read the notification before assuming that customers or staff caused the problem.
A negative review can be genuine. Separate an unpleasant customer experience from content that violates policy. Use the review-removal guide when a review is fake or otherwise reportable. Do not promise a customer that you can remove a review, and do not treat a temporary pause as evidence that all criticism is invalid. These protections reduce abuse; they do not remove the need to investigate complaints.
12 March 2026: conversational Maps discovery
Google announced Ask Maps on 12 March with an initial US and India rollout on Android and iOS. It answers complex place questions with personalized suggestions. This release affects the customer’s discovery journey. Google did not publish an owner-side Ask Maps ranking control or a guaranteed inclusion method in that announcement.
Owner action: inspect your profile as someone planning a visit. Does it show the right location, category, hours and destination? Can a visitor understand appointment requirements and access? Make truthful corrections that help ordinary Search and Maps users too. Avoid stuffing the business name with phrases that imitate conversational prompts. A new discovery interface does not make an inaccurate business name acceptable.
10 February 2026: short names stop appearing on profiles
In a Google employee announcement dated 10 February, Google said existing short names and their URLs would keep working but would no longer appear publicly on profiles. Owners already could not create or edit short names; the announcement also removed the customer reporting option. This was described as a rollout over the following weeks.
Owner action: test existing short links used on printed cards, receipts and your website before replacing them. A missing short name on the profile is not, by itself, proof that the destination stopped working. Preserve a working customer route and check the actual link. Do not instruct staff to create a new short name using an older tutorial.
Checked 8 October 2026: WhatsApp is not the retired inbox
Google’s profile-editing help documents WhatsApp and text messaging for claimed, verified profiles in selected regions. The page does not establish one universal launch date, so this entry records the check date. In your profile, look for the available Chat option and use a business contact that staff can actually monitor.
The old Business Profile chat and call-history features ended on 31 July 2024. A present-day WhatsApp link should not be confused with restoring that inbox or historical call records. Customers can still call your business. The WhatsApp setup guide explains the current contact path and the availability limits.
Worked example: sorting three apparent updates
Illustrative scenario: a Jaipur clinic receives an hours-edit alert, sees an Ask Maps article and cannot find the Gemini connection. The manager should treat these as three different checks. First she verifies the public hours against the reception roster. Then she records which Gemini account she used and checks eligibility. Finally she reviews the clinic’s public booking instructions for visitors.
She does not change profile ownership, remove managers or rename the clinic. The hours error can be fixed independently of Gemini access. Ask Maps preparation can happen without a new connection. This separation prevents an owner from making disruptive account changes to solve what is really a rollout or eligibility limitation.
Keep a small change log: source URL, announcement or check date, affected account, intended action and public result. For a corrected field, write down what is visible after saving. For an unavailable feature, write down the condition still unverified. “Announcement read” and “change visible to customers” are different completion states.
A maintenance routine that survives interface changes
Use the profile checklist as the stable baseline between releases. Assign someone to verify hours before closures, review contact links after a website change and inspect unexpected suggestions. Keep source dates on advice you share with staff. If a tutorial refers to a button you cannot see, compare it with current Google help before assuming your listing is broken.
When a release is gradual, the useful next step is a bounded account check, not repeated settings changes. Record what you can verify today and leave the rest as unavailable or unconfirmed. This article should be refreshed when Google publishes another material owner-facing change; the 8 October check date is a snapshot, not a guarantee about future availability.
Check your current profile
Reach’s free Business Profile audit helps you inspect the listing you have now. Use its findings to prioritize concrete profile work; it does not certify access to a Google rollout or promise an AI recommendation. Keep the audit beside your dated change log.
