You can't pay or apply to be recommended by ChatGPT. It builds local answers from web search, Bing's business data, review directories and business websites. Studies show it rarely cites your Google Business Profile. Check which sites it cites for your category, then fix your website, Bing Places, those directories and your reviews. Nobody can guarantee a result.
Where does ChatGPT get local business information?
The studies disagree on the exact shares. They agree that your website, Bing, directories and reviews matter most. For a full comparison across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI, read where AI assistants get local business data.
- Yelp leads and Google Business Profile barely shows up. BrightLocal (26 Aug 2026, 1.9M citations across 1,355 locations in the US, UK and Australia) found Yelp was about 60% of ChatGPT's local citations and appeared in 80% of its answers. Google Business Profile was about 0.4%.
- Business websites are most of the cited domains. In the same study, about 93% of all cited domains, across all AI platforms, were individual business websites.
- Bing Places is a major source. Local Falcon (5 Nov 2025) calls Bing Places "one of the biggest data sources". It also lists Yelp, Tripadvisor, BBB, MapQuest, Yellow Pages, business websites, chamber of commerce sites, OpenTable, Booking.com, local publications and Facebook pages. It says ChatGPT does not use Google Business Profile data directly.
- Maps and listings come from several places. Search Engine Land reports that ChatGPT's maps use Mapbox, and its listings come from Bing results and Bing Places, Yelp, Foursquare, Tripadvisor and vertical directories.
- Splits vary by study. An earlier BrightLocal study split ChatGPT's sources as 58% websites, 27% mentions and 15% directories.
What changes in India and Southeast Asia? All these studies cover the US, UK and Australia. Yelp has thin coverage in India and most of Southeast Asia, so ChatGPT has to cite something else: your website, local directories and the local press. This is an inference from where the studies were run. No study yet measures it. The reliable way to find out is to ask ChatGPT and read what it cites.
How picky is ChatGPT? Very. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index (350,000 locations) found that Google's local 3-pack showed 35.9% of locations, while ChatGPT recommended 1.2%. Recommended places averaged 4.3 stars. Places near 3.4 stars that replied to under 5% of reviews were "effectively invisible". This is a vendor study, so treat the numbers as a guide.
The 7-step checklist
- Run the test prompt. Open ChatGPT with search on. Ask "best [category] in [area], [city]" and "[category] near [landmark] open Sunday". Try three phrasings. Note which businesses it recommends and which sites it cites. That list of sites is your to-do list.
- Fix your website's facts. Put your exact name, address, phone, hours, services and prices (or a price range) on one page, as text. Don't put them only in an image. Make them match your Google Business Profile. If you have no website, a simple page counts.
- Claim Bing Places for Business at bing.com/forbusiness. Search for your business first and claim the existing listing if there is one, rather than adding a second. Bing offers an import from Google Business Profile, but Microsoft's FAQ warns that an import can create duplicates, so check the name, category, website and hours before you continue. Microsoft's current help says an address is needed for verification, and eligible service providers can hide it from search results. Finish whichever verification Bing offers, then compare the public listing with your website. Check the steps on the day, because the screens can change. You need to do this by hand. Reach does not manage Bing Places.
- Fix the directories ChatGPT cited in step 1. In India, that often means Practo for doctors and clinics, Justdial and Sulekha for general services, and Zomato and Swiggy for restaurants and cafes. In Southeast Asia, check what ChatGPT cites in your city: Grab and Foodpanda for food, and local directories that vary by city. Use the same name, phone and hours everywhere. See how to fix your business info across listings. Reach does not manage these listings.
- Get more reviews and reply to all of them. In SOCi's study, recommended places averaged 4.3 stars, and low reply rates went with being invisible. Reply to every review. For more reviews, read how to ask customers for Google reviews.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete anyway. Google's AI tools use it heavily. BrightLocal found it was 67% of AI Overviews citations and 53% of AI Mode citations. Many ChatGPT users also search on Google. See the AI Overviews and AI Mode guide.
- Re-run the test every month. Use the same prompts with the same wording. Write down who appears and what is cited. Answers change from one run to the next, so look at the trend over several runs.

Worked example
This example is illustrative.
Smile Studio is a dental clinic in Indiranagar, Bengaluru. The owner asks ChatGPT for "best dentist in Indiranagar". It names three clinics. Smile Studio is not one of them. The cited sources are Practo, two clinic websites and a local news listicle.
The owner checks each source and finds three problems:
- The Practo profile has an old phone number.
- The clinic website shows its hours only in an image.
- The clinic has no Bing Places listing.
In one afternoon, the owner corrects the Practo phone number, adds the hours as text on the website and claims Bing Places using the Google import. The clinic has 4.6 stars from 120 reviews but has replied to only 30% of them, so the owner starts replying to every review.
There is no promised outcome. The owner now runs the same prompt every month and records whether Smile Studio appears.
| Cited source | Problem found | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Practo | Problem foundAn old phone number | FixCorrect the number |
| Clinic website | Problem foundHours shown only in an image | FixAdd the hours as text |
| Bing Places | Problem foundNo listing | FixClaim it with the Google import |

- Answers change between runs and depend on the user's location. Test several times before you draw a conclusion.
- Does Reach get me into ChatGPT?
- No. Reach keeps your Google profile, reviews and booking page in order. It does not manage Bing Places, Yelp or directories.
