Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and prominence. You can raise relevance with your category, services and description. You can raise prominence with reviews, replies, photos and mentions on other sites. You can't change distance. There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.
What decides who ranks first on Google Maps?
Google uses three factors, all defined on its local ranking help page:
- Relevance is "how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for."
- Distance is "how far each business is from the customer who's searching."
- Prominence is "how well-known a business is." Google says it is "based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have."
What do the businesses in the top 3 have in common?
Reach benchmarked Google Maps results on 2026-10-07. The study covered 6 business types in 11 cities in India and Southeast Asia: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Bangkok. It recorded ranks 1 to 20, searched from each city's centre point with no personalisation.
The top 3 were much closer to the search point:
| Business type | Median distance, top 3 | Median distance, ranks 4-20 |
|---|---|---|
| Dentists | Median distance, top 30.24 km | Median distance, ranks 4-200.86 km |
| Salons | Median distance, top 30.2 km | Median distance, ranks 4-200.63 km |
| Gyms | Median distance, top 30.28 km | Median distance, ranks 4-201.11 km |
| Physiotherapists | Median distance, top 30.88 km | Median distance, ranks 4-201.71 km |
| Restaurants | Median distance, top 30.11 km | Median distance, ranks 4-200.23 km |
The top 3 did not have more reviews:
| Business type | Median reviews, top 3 | Median reviews, ranks 4-20 |
|---|---|---|
| Dentists | Median reviews, top 390 | Median reviews, ranks 4-20147 |
| Salons | Median reviews, top 384 | Median reviews, ranks 4-20137 |
| Gyms | Median reviews, top 389 | Median reviews, ranks 4-20108 |
Caveat: this used one search point and one day per city. Rank here shows correlation, not cause.
The takeaway is that more reviews won't beat distance. Judge your rank in the area near you, and win relevance and prominence there.
Which factor can I actually change?
| Factor | What you can change | How fast it moves |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | What you can changePrimary category, additional categories, services, description, complete info | How fast it movesDays to weeks |
| Distance | What you can changeNothing. Set the right pin. Service areas don't make you closer. | How fast it movesn/a |
| Prominence | What you can changeReviews and replies, photos, links and mentions from other sites | How fast it movesMonths |
Google says "Businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results" and "More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking."
What can I do about distance?
- Put the pin in the right place. Google measures distance from your pin, so a pin that is off moves you away from the customers you want.
- Don't expect a service area to bring you closer. It lists where you travel. It doesn't move the point your distance is measured from.
- Judge your rank near you. In the benchmark the top 3 sat much closer to the search point than ranks 4 to 20. Win the area around your shop first, then the next ring out.
How do I improve relevance?
Your primary category has the most effect on relevance. It should name what you are, not everything you do. A dental clinic picks "Dentist", not "Medical clinic". See how to choose your Google Business Profile category. Every other relevance field, from services to the description, is covered one by one in ways to optimize your Google Business Profile.
Then add services in your customers' words. Write "root canal treatment", not "endodontics". Write a description that says what you do and where you do it. See how to write your Google Business Profile description.
How do I build prominence?
- Review pace. A steady flow of new reviews works better than a burst in one week, and the benchmark agrees in part: top-3 dentists gained a median 3.1 new reviews a month against 2.4 at ranks 4 to 20. Top-3 salons gained 0.9 against 2.5, so treat pace as one signal, not a rule. Google's own tips include respond to reviews. See how to ask customers for Google reviews and how to reply to Google reviews.
- Photos and videos. Google lists adding photos as a tip. In the benchmark, top-3 dentists had a median 37 photos against 49 at ranks 4 to 20, so quantity isn't the lever. See Google Business Profile photos.
- Links and mentions from other sites. Prominence uses "how many websites link to your business". Good sources are local association pages, suppliers, news sites and directories. Keep the same name, address and phone on each one. See how to fix business info across listings.
- Replies. Top-3 dentists replied to a median 60% of recent reviews within 13 days. Dentists at ranks 4 to 20 replied to 35% within 20 days. The 11-city reply data has every business type.
Why does my rank change from one place to the next?
Google measures distance from the person searching. Your business can rank 1st from your own doorstep and not appear at all 2 km away. If you search from your shop or your own phone, you will see a better rank than most customers see.
To measure fairly:
- Use the same search each time.
- Check from fixed points around your business.
- Check on the same day each week.
- Log out or use an incognito window.
Reach checks a 3x3 grid of 9 points every week. The free local rank checker runs one check. See how to track local rankings on Google Maps.
What should I stop doing?
- Adding keywords or your city to the business name. Google's rule is "Your name should reflect your business's real-world name." Breaking it can lead to suspension. See Google Business Profile name rules and what to do if your profile is suspended.
- Buying reviews or giving discounts for reviews. Google's review policy bans offers that "Offer incentives – such as payment, discounts, free goods and/or services - in exchange for posting any review."
- Paying anyone who promises a guaranteed #1. You can't pay Google for local rank. Google Ads results carry an ad label and are separate from the Maps ranking.
- Making many edits in a row. Edits can take up to 3 days to appear. Changes to your name or category can also trigger re-verification.
How long until my rank moves?
- New businesses: "Rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results."
- Category and service changes: judge them after 2 to 4 weekly checks, not after one day.
- Prominence work: expect months.
Worked example (illustrative)
Smile Care Dental is a clinic in Andheri West, Mumbai. This example is illustrative.
The owner runs a grid check for "dentist near me". The clinic is in the top 3 at the 3 points closest to it. At the 3 points farthest north, it doesn't appear in the top 20.
The primary category is "Medical clinic". The owner makes these changes:
- Change the primary category to Dentist.
- Add the services "teeth cleaning", "root canal treatment" and "braces".
- Work on reviews. The clinic has 41 reviews. The two clinics that win the north points have 300+ each. The owner sends every patient a WhatsApp review link after their second visit and replies to each review within 2 days.
After 4 weekly checks, the clinic is in the top 3 at 5 of 9 points (illustrative). The 3 north points still go to a clinic that is physically closer. No change will beat that distance, so the owner stops worrying about those points.
FAQ
- How do I get in the top 3 on Google Maps?
- The same three factors decide it. The top 3 is set for each search and each searcher's location, so measure it on a grid of points.
- Does posting on Google Business Profile improve ranking?
- Google's tip list names complete info, verification, hours, reviews and photos. Posts aren't on that list. They help the customers who see your profile. See Google Business Profile posts.
- Does my website affect Maps ranking?
- Prominence uses "how many websites link to your business." A website gives other sites something to link to.
- Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?
- No. There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
- Why did my rank drop suddenly?
- Check for pending edits, a suspension, a new competitor nearby, or a name or category change made by Google. See how to fix business info across listings and why your profile isn't showing on Maps.
- Does adding a keyword to my business name help?
- It breaks Google's name guideline and puts your profile at risk of suspension.
